workday in the garden

Yesterday was "Herbfest" at our local farmers market. I racked up on herbs! you can see a list and photo here (it's at the bottom of the post). Yesterday and today were spent in the garden working.



I planted the latest Hydrangea that my stepmum gave me, as well as potting up and planting some of the bounty from the herb fest.

this bed is going to have black-eyed susans, shasta daisies and something i don't know the name of... they'll come from my mums, i dug it out yesterday.

this is my new bed i dug out today... it already had the angelica (in the middle) that survived from last year and i planted the hydrangea and two purple coneflower plants. I also put in some sunflower seeds along the back and hope that they will grow.

these are a bunch of the herbs that i bought in pots...several will need to come inside when the weather drops to freezing...

I'll leave you with a photo of my iris' that opened up this morning. My front flower bed is full of them.

Photo Hunt #13 - Protect(ion)

a lovely time in the garden

I spent a little time in the garden tonight. I'm slowly working through the back, weeding and creating flower beds in the yard. Tonight I cleaned up the bed where my rue plant and my spirea is planted. I need to move the spirea. I put it near the steps on my deck and it just doesn't have room to spread and be pretty.

I started putting in a border using the wood pieces left over from the fence, but I'm not sure if I like it. I'm going to give it a few days before I either finish it or take it out.

I'm very happy with the progress I'm making. I hope to get the vegetable patch tilled in a few days and get some plants in the ground. I still haven't decided what I want to plant, but I'm thinking about trying some things I've never done before. I really want to plant pumpkins and may have enough space, but couldn't plant anything else. We'll see...

I'm going to the local herb festival on Saturday and am making a list of the herbs and plants that I want to add to my collection. My angelica is really getting big and I can't wait to see what happens with it.

Well, I suppose that is all for tonight. I'm quite tired from a long week at work and am probably going to turn in soon.

returning...

So much has been happening lately. I've been getting a lot done around the house. The painter started two Saturdays ago. He can only work on Saturdays so it will take a little while. (He's family, so it's okay.) :-)

My favorite and most needed project was completed a little over a week ago. I just haven't had a chance to post about it.

Ever since the fence was finished I've spent as many hours of sunlight in my yard as I can. If you look closely in the pictures of the front above, you can see the mulch I added to the beds. It took me two days to finish, but it looks so much better. I've also been weeding in the back yard and working on the garden and getting it ready to plant. I just need to get it tilled, then I can start planting.

I'm really enjoying being outside now. It is nice to be out there and not feel so self-conscious of my neighbor looking in my yard and watching me work. I'll leave you with a few of my favorite pictures I've taken lately.

Spring is here. In less than an hour, the first day of spring will arrive. Despite my love for winter and my wishes that here in the south we could have a longer winter, I am ready for spring. I am ready to get out in my garden, to open my windows and feel the breeze blow in to clean out the lethargy of winter.



I am ready to watch the flowers grow and bloom, to watch the clouds as they pass through the bright beautiful sunshine, to feel some warmth on my skin.

I feel this way.. I am anxious to be in my garden, working my fingers through the dirt and planting and nurturing in my own way.

I wish you a warm, sunshiny first day of spring...

I am so behind on blogging and blog reading that I wonder if I can get caught up. It has been a long and busy week (and it's only Wednesday); and the rest of the week looks pretty busy too. I have some things to share, pictures and tidbits, but I won't get to that tonight.
Hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to get a real post up.
